One of the longest-standing surf traditions in Florida—a premier community surf contest on the East Coast
In the wake of loss, a local high school marketing class proposed a memorial surf contest—and from that grief, a lasting tradition was born. Every fall, “The Tommy” draws surfers, families, and spectators to Flagler Beach for the long-awaited three-day gathering.
The Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Classic began in 1998 not only as a tribute to Tommy Tant—a beloved 24-year-old surfer who passed away unexpectedly from an undiagnosed aortic aneurysm—but also as a way to bring the community together in the wake of a profound and unprecedented loss.
Uniting generations of families, friends, and neighbors through a shared experience that strengthens the fabric of Florida coastal communities.
Giving funds to fuel education through scholarships, provide nourishment through local food banks, and support life-changing research with The Marfan Foundation.
In 2025, we announced a new focus to support the athletic and professional development of Florida surfers who have the potential to make a significant contribution to the local and global surf community.
In 2026, we launched our Fellows Program, which includes year-round mentorship with former professional surfers and successful entrepreneurs, as well as financial grants to fund specific projects unique to each athlete’s career.
For over two decades, our family has intentionally shaped “The Tommy” in light of our belief that every human life is irreplaceable. We believed this when Tommy was present, but we truly felt the depth of it in his absence.
In the busyness of life, we can easily lose sight of this simple yet profound truth. One of the biggest mistakes is to get to the end of our lives and realize we valued the wrong things.
Each year, ‘the Tommy’ reminds all of us to reorient our lives with family, friendship, and community at the center. Simply put, we spend the weekend doing what we love with those we love.
We work hard to make it a meaningful and memorable experience for all who are involved, and we care deeply about stewarding the funds given and raised.
